The pantanal is home to around 10 million Caimans and one can approach a lot of them very close by boat on the banks of the river Cuiaba and its many tributries.
A giant river otter makes a meal out of a fish on the Cuiaba river. They are the largest member of the weasel family with some individuals reaching upto 1.7 meters in length. They live in small groups and are very social. They can be extremely aggressive as a group and even Jaguars normally shy away from hunting them.
We saw a red and green macaw at his nest high up in the rain canopy of the Amazonian rain forest. Getting eye-level with the nest was quite a task. The green winged macaws generally mate for life. The female incubates the eggs (typically 2/3) for around 4 weeks. The chicks fledge after around 3 months.
Whoopers walk very awkwardly on ice as their feet can’t support their body weight for long. The hot springs cause the ice on the edge of the lakes to melt and they land and congregate in the water near the lake shores
We haven't seen a more vivid bill on any other bird. Toucans have the longest bill amongst birds. At around 20 cms, the bill is very light as its made of keratin but is strong enough for digging and fighting
