Snow Leopards in Ladakh- “Ghost of the mountains”
One of our first few expeditions in the wild was to look for Snow leopards in Ladakh. We stayed for more than a month in freezing temperatures but managed to see this magnificent cat from far away on the high cliffs of the Himalayas. We would jokingly say, "oh! that is a megapixel leopard." No wonder it is called the ghost of the mountains. If you see one, it feels like the biggest achievement of your life. It was not until 2018 that our luck shined and we came across a male snow leopard and also a 7 month old cub who would come back to the same location for 5-6 days. Both of them were eyeing the same kill of a Yak in that area and we had hit a jackpot. A Snow Leopard's body is strong enough to climb steep & high slopes of Himalayas and the strength in its hind legs allow it to leap six times the length of its body. While the beautiful and long furry tail stands out; it helps in balancing and wraps around like a blanket providing protection against the severe cold. Here are some of the rare glimpses of this elusive cat.

White Tigress, Taibo and her son, Bird take a walk early morning
This beautiful white tigress is fondly called Taibo and her sub adult son, Bird was refusing to leave her side. Cubs stay with their mother until 18-20 months before they become independent. Bird was already 24 months old and still very close to his mother. Team GT visited Tiger Canyon in South Africa where John Varty has been spearheading a programme with the single aim of creating an alternative population of wild tigers in Africa. He brought two tiger cubs from a zoo and helped re-introduce them into the wild. Their first cubs were born in the wild in 2008 and today there are 14 wild tigers which live in Tiger Canyon.
